24- year old New York woman, Jane Seo, admitted to cheating at the Ft. Lauderdale Half Marathon on Sunday. She was discovered by Derek Murphy, a marathon investigator, whose purpose it is to find the cheaters by detecting course cutters, analyzing race results and investigating questionable results. Seo was discovered as a cheater from her own fitness trackers, a Garmin 235. She finished Sunday’s race with a time of 1:21:46, but Murphy noticed a discrepancy. She should have been running at a 7:09 minute/mile pace for the 1st 10k, but then at a 5:25 minute/mile pace for the rest of the 11.08km. This was the smoking gun for his investigation.
Seo is a blogger for Buzzfeed and Huffington Post, both purveyors of fake news and claims to be a 2014 Harvard Graduate on her Twitter. Just one week after the race, Seo tweeted out an article about how she is a good runner: “Like King Kong climbing the Empire State Building, I scaled an 8 foot wall to the finish line at the City Challenge Race in New York City this past weekend.”
Her regret did not last long if it only took her 1 week to go back to her antics. From a screenshot captured by DailyMail from her deleted Instagram:
“I made a HORRIBLE choice at the Ft. lauderdale Half Marathon on Sunday, Feb.20. I wasn’t feeling well so I CUT THE COURSE and headed to the finish line. I got swept away in the moment and pretended I ran the entire course, when in fact I CHEATED and should have DISQUALIFIED myself. Even worse, not only did I steal the award from the true, well-deserved runners/finishers, but also proceeded to BIKE the course afterward with my GPS watch to cover my wrongdoings. What an idiot I was! As I admit to my foolishness, I am extremely ashamed. I sincerely apology for bringing negativity out of the running community that I truly admire and respect. I take full credit for this mistake without any excuses and will face the consequences. I am so sorry, everyone.”
