Attorney General Jeff Sessions held an emergency press conference today in which he said that he never had meeting about Russian operatives or intermediaries about the Presidential campaign. In his press conference, he denied that he had any part in the continuing exchange of information between Trump surrogates and intermediaries for the Russian government. He did not deny having the three meetings, but said that they were unrelated to the Trump campaign. He said that he answered all questions regarding meetings with Russians as honest based on the wording of the questions at the time. He is also officially recusing himself of any existing and future investigations related to the campaigns for the President of the united states, which would remove himself of any potential questions of impropriety.
From Young Conservatives:
“Sessions said those questions and answers were in the context with meeting with them on the subject of the campaign. He had met with the Russian ambassador twice during the course of his responsibility as a Senator. He serves on the Senate Armed Services Committee. As Sen. Ted Cruz noted earlier today, it is a part of the job to meet with ambassadors. He called the controversy a ‘nothing burger’. Democratic senator Claire McCaskill had criticized Sessions in a tweet claiming that she had never met with the Russian ambassador, ever. It was revealed that she had in fact met with and talked with the ambassador on more than one occasion. This seems at this point to be another ‘nothing burger’ in the words of Sen. Cruz, spun up by the Democrats to keep hyping the Russian connection and take shots at Trump appointees. But it’s wise of Sessions to recuse himself as he then removes himself from any potential question of impropriety. It also removes that attack point from the Democrats.”
