United States Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein has appointed former FBI Director Robert Mueller to oversee an investigation of President Trump, Rosenstein confirmed in a statement today.
Mueller will be tasked with proving or disproving that the Trump campaign colluded with the Russian government to take down Hillary Clinton before her November election loss.
Though Mueller is a lifelong Republican, he is held in deep esteem on both sides of the aisle.
“I determined that it is in the public interest for me to exercise my authority and appoint a Special Counsel to assume responsibility for this matter,” Rosenstein said in his statement.
However, the deputy then clarified that he is taking no pre-assumptions into either the decision or in overseeing Mueller’s investigation.
“My decision is not a finding that crimes have been committed or that any prosecution is warranted,” he added.
