Police were able to safely detain an axe-wielding criminal that broke into a radio station, holding everyone hostage.
Richard Newton arrived at the Kiss 108 radio studios in Medford, Massachusetts, sporting a large axe. He flashed it at security and demanded they play ‘My Axe’ by Insane Clown Posse.
The man was dressed up as a fan of the band the ‘Insane Clown Posse’, which is already known for having pretty strange fans. The band also has some suggestively violent lyrics, and it has been found that many teenage shooters have listened or been fans in the past.
The Daily Mail reports:
Lyrics to My Ax, the song Newton requested, include: ‘My axe is my buddy, and when I wind him back/Me and my axe will give your forehead a buttcrack.’
The station called the cops and Newton reportedly returned to his car. When police arrived, officers say he rammed the vehicle but did not threaten anyone with the ax.
Witnesses told NECN that Newtown, who was drinking beer during the stand-off, also had several knives inside the vehicle.
Officers negotiated with the suspect during the tense stand-off by cell phone and through the car window, but they say that at one point Newtown, simply got out his car and told them: ‘I guess you’re just going to have to kill me.’
Cops say they used non-lethal weapons, including a Taser, to try and subdue him but he was able to get back into the car.
‘We had less-than-lethal weapons that we deployed to attempt to subdue the subject, but those efforts were not successful,’ Medford police Lt. Joseph Casey told the Boston Herald.
‘There was a Taser. And we did have a less-than-lethal beanbag shotgun weapon on hand, as well as long-armed weapons in case the situation became more volatile.’
Dylan Sprague, vice president of programming with iheartradio.com, said his employees could hear the man saying he wanted to hear a song.
‘He definitely was talking about requesting a song,’ Sprague said.
After several hours of the standoff, Newton dropped the axe out of the window and surrendered.
Police were able to arrest him. Newton is now in custody and undergoing a mental evaluation.
