Isn’t it satirical for a writing center to declare grammar racist? Well, the Tacoma Writing Center at the University of Washington has resolved to teach students that the conventional grammar rules perpetuate “white supremacy” and inequality.
According to the chief writing instructor, Dr. Asao Inoue, a student’s use of language should not be critiqued because it creates an implication that one grammatical standard exist, which is quite discriminatory. A poster released by the university further explained that the constant changes in language makes it difficult to categorizing people according to their version of communication.
The school is now focusing on indoctrinating students on the racist nature of grammar
The Federalist Paper reports:
Because we all live, work, learn, and communicate within such racist systems, the consultants in the writing center assume that a big part of our job is to help students become more critical of these unjust language structures as they affect students’ writing and the judgment of that writing. In particular, being aware of racism as structural offers students the best chances to develop as writers and succeed on their own terms in an inherently racist society
