Willyncia Joy Harper, 22, a volunteer coach for a girl’s volleyball league in Alabama was arrested after having a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old team member.
WBRC reports that the mother of the young girls had allegedly found the two together in December. While the child alleges that she and Harper had several sexual encounters, Harper denies having sexual contact with the child, insisting that the two “were like sisters.”
After the arrest, Harper has been banned from the high school and other district properties.
“Any time we have an allegation of wrongdoing by adults we are required to be a mandatory reporter to notify DHR. We also notify our school resource officer and we turn it over to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department,” Craig Pouncey, Jefferson County Schools Superintendent, said. “It’s their charge to investigate and to ensure all children are protected. We took immediate action and notified the individual they would be charged with trespassing on any Jefferson County properties.”
The Daily Mail continues reports:
The teen’s mother said she discovered the alleged relationship when she went to pick her daughter up at the girl’s father’s house on December 6 and saw that Harper was there alone with her daughter. She said she got an uneasy feeling and questioned the girl, who at first denied anything inappropriate.
But finally the girl admitted having a sexual relationship with Harper, said the mom. The teen was on the volleyball team that Harper volunteered to coach.
A school resource officer was notified on December 7 and the Department of Human Resources was also notified according to state law. An investigation was opened by Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department.
The school said it took swift and appropriate action and that Harper, who was also a graduate of the school, had passed a background check.
