Members of an African robotics team disappeared after participating in the FIRST Global Challenge robotics competition in Washington DC, Town Hall reports.
Two members of the six-person Burundi team were reportedly spotted in Canada after crossing the border from the US.
The two students were identified as 16-year-old Don Ingabire and 17-year-old Audrey Mwamikazi.
The location of the other four students remains unknown.
The competition was held in DC from Sunday to Tuesday. The team was reported missing on Wednesday.
Burundi, an East African nation, has been plagued by political violence. The State Department issued a travel warning saying “the political situation in Burundi is tenuous, and there is sporadic violence throughout the country, including frequent gunfire and grenade attacks by armed groups.”
The State Department also said “rebel forces, ex-combatants, and youth gangs have crossed into Burundi from the Democratic Republic of Congo and attacked and kidnapped civilians.”
