According to 60 Minutes, more than 800 churches around the country are offering sanctuary to illegal immigrants.
ICE has a long standing policy of avoiding places of worship as an option to detain an illegal immigrant, although there is no law the would prevent the arrest in a church.
As the Trump administration has put increasing focus on ensuring that the immigration laws are followed pressure has increased on sanctuary cities. It is unclear if the Trump administration will change ICE’s position on avoiding churches.
But I will also say that the rule of law is something that America is built on. Ragsdale said his advice for people like Garcia is they should come out of the basement of the churches and follow the law.
— ICE Deputy Director Daniel Ragsdale
While the motives of the churches are no doubt good ones, they are potentially harming those they seek to serve.
It is a simple fact that not all illegal immigrants are good people. Many are involved in crime, and the risk of the churches of violence occurring will increase as they house more of these criminal illegal immigrants.
