Reports of yet another 8-year-old child bride in the Middle East dying on her wedding night after being married to a man five times her age. She died of injuries of a sexual nature. This particular case took place in Yemen.
According to AWM, nearly a quarter of the female population is married by the time they turn 15, in Yemen. The tradition has some gruesome consequences.
Activists have come out to fight for the 8-year-old girl, who they say was killed from internal bleeding after her nearly 50-year-old “husband” raped her.
The Daily Mail reports:
Many are calling for the husband to be arrested in an effort to seek justice for the girl’s family.
Now, because of atrocities such as this, activists are calling for the practice of marrying young girls to be put to an end in the country.
A blogger known as Angry Man posted about the practice and also about the incident involving the 8-year-old bride. He referred to the husband as “an animal who deserved to be punished severely for his crime,” and added that “all those who supported such a crime should also be punished.”
Activists are being met with resistance from the population, who insist on keeping the traditions of having young brides.
In addition to dying on their wedding nights, these young girls are dying in childbirth, or from spousal abuse.
