Celeste Paula Marroquin, 20, and Ricardo Perez Salas, 23, of South Carolina have been charged with child abuse after their 5-month-old baby had to be placed on a respirator after the father put his finger down the baby’s throat for an extended period of time.
Police say the father complained that the baby was crying, so he choked the child on his finger until it was apparent that the child was in bad shape.
It was several days before the parents brought the baby into the hospital.
According to WSPA, Marroquin has been charged with two counts of unlawful neglect of a child and is being held on $20,000 bond. Salas has been charged with child abuse and unlawful neglect of a child, with no bond.
During an investigation into the incident, deputies discovered that Salas had put his finger down the infant’s throat for an extended period of time while the baby was crying, causing severe damage.
Salas was in a home with the child, despite an order from the Department of Social Services which prohibits him from having contact with the child.
Since it took several days for the parents to bring the infant in, damage was extensive enough that the child was placed in immediate surgery.
Due to the father’s other brushes with the law, the couple decided to cover up the injuries that he caused the infant, until it was clear that the child might die.
The child is being monitored at the hospital, but doctors say that kid will make a full recovery.
