An unnamed 14-year-old-boy had shot and killed his 13-year-old California classmate, Diego Perez after school last week while Perez was hanging out in his apartment with his girlfriend. The 14-year-old was caught and arrested. Now, his mother is telling the police that her son shot Perez because the two boys fought at school.
Witnesses say that Perez was in his apartment complex with his girlfriend when they heard shots fired. They say they saw Perez push his girlfriend to the side before running out of the apartment and collapsing due to his wounds.
The Daily Mail reports:
Friends said Perez was hanging out at home in the complex with his girlfriend when shots were fired.
Perez pushed his girlfriend down and then ran out of the apartment and collapsed on the street.
‘When I came they were pumping him and the helicopter was coming, but it was too late,’ said the teen’s tearful mother, Tricia Sease.
Perez’s mother told the outlet that the suspect had previously gotten into a fight with her son at school.
She said her son was getting ready to join a summer basketball league.
‘It’s very unusual to have this level of violence at that young of an age,’ said Lt. Mark Padilla of the Fresno County sheriff’s office.
The suspect, whose name isn’t being released since he’s a minor, is being held in juvenile custody. He was tracked down through witnesses, said police.
Botti says investigators are trying to establish a motive for the shooting but says, ‘Everything points it to being an intentional act.’
He said it’s too early to tell if the shooting was gang-related. It’s unknown how the suspect got a gun and the weapon has yet to be located, said police, according to the Fresno Bee.
