A 13-year-old South Carolina boy is being hailed as a neighborhood hero after he successfully defended his home against a couple of burglars were trying to break in.
The 13-year-old, sensing danger, grabbed his mother’s gun, and confronted the robbers. He was home alone when he heard noise.
He shot and killed one of the suspects, while the other escaped but was later apprehended by police.
“I’m speechless right now,” the boy’s mother told the Post and Courier after the incident. “Who knows how this would have turned out.”
The incident occurred around 1:30 p.m. when the boy spotted a car pull up behind his house. An arrest affidavit stated that the boy grabbed his mother’s gun when the suspects broke in, and quickly began firing. The two suspects fled but the boy continued firing as they drove away.
Lamar Anthwan Brown was shot three times and was driven to the hospital by Ira Bennett, who told authorities that they were shot at in their car while driving on the interstate.During a subsequent investigation, authorities found a pistol in the backyard of the home, which didn’t belong to the boy’s family.
“I tell my kids that if anything ever happens to call 911, but I also tell them to protect themselves if they have to,” the boy’s mother said. “I never would have dreamed that this would have been a part of our day today.”
The boy told media that his mother had told him several times before where she kept the gun in case anything would happen. He grabbed the gun without hesitation. Then he noticed that the criminals also had a gun, which is when he started shooting off rounds.
The boy is being applauded across social media, and in his own neighborhood for being brave enough to fight off the intruders.
