Prosecutors worried they may not be able to get a conviction for an accused pimp and rapist offered him a light plea deal but he has rejected it and will take his chances in trial.
On Tuesday, 54-year-old Sherman Gamble rejected a plea deal that would give him three years in jail and five years of probation if he pleaded guilty to assault and promoting prostitution. Sherman rejected the deal and has pleaded not guilty to rape, kidnapping, assault, promoting prostitution, sex trafficking, and endangering the welfare of a child.
The case stems from a woman who claimed to be a live-in nanny for Gamble but was actually a prostitute and he was her pimp. According to the 22-year-old accuser, Gamble tortured, raped, and held her captive in his apartment.
She says Gamble told her “you don’t know who you’re dealing with, I’m black Hitler. You’re a b*tch and a slut. You need a… pimp and you need to be regulated. I’m going to kill you. You’re the type of b*tch that should be hung upside down and skinned alive.”
She also says Gamble shoved a newspaper down her throat.
The woman escaped by telling him she needed to go to the bank. She was treated at Beth Israel Hospital for bruises and swelling from the alleged beating.
Prosecutors worry that the prostitute-turned-accuser won’t make for a great witness in front of the jury. That’s what Gamble’s attorney Norman Steiner is banking on.
“He’s not considering [a plea deal],” Steiner said. “This case is a fabricated story by a non-credible witness who masquerades herself as a nanny.”
Assistant District Attorney Courtney Graves says “the defendant is a known pimp and has been investigated as such since at least 2009, though he has never been charged before now.”
