The teenager who heinously punched an elderly woman in the back of the head and showed no remorse by posting a video of the incident has been arrested. Devin Alexander, a 16-year-old from Rochester, N.Y., was arrested for violating the terms of his probation for a robbery conviction and is currently in custody. The teenager who filmed the attack is still currently on the loose. If convicted on any charges, it’s still unclear whether they will be tried as minors or adults.
Alexander posted his knockout attack to Facebook under the name “True Goon ToCool Sneekey.” The now-removed video shows the teenager initially stating that he would hit the old lady with a snowball, but he instead punched her in the head and celebrated with glee. Alexander repeatedly yelled “Smack Cam!” as he and the videographer fled the scene. Luckily, the woman did not appear to have any serious injuries.
However, plenty of people are outraged at Rochester police for their response to the situation. Alexander Rochester police spokeswoman Sgt. Elena Correia said that despite a clear punch being thrown, assault charges against Alexander would not be filed because assault requires a victim to have suffered “substantial pain.” She also claimed the incident was not similar to a knockout game attack and described it as “more likely an example of a harassment than an assault.”
Last month, Texas native Conrad Alvin Barrett, who is white, was charged with a hate crime for his knockout game beating of an elderly black man. He has been denied bail and faces up to 10 years in prison.
