In one of the most outrageous recent displays of cops going a power trip, a Texas woman was arrested for crossing the street while jogging. The incident took place yesterday in Austin, where the woman was handcuffed and placed in the back of a squad car for failing to provide identification after she was stopped. The incident was caught on tape by Chris Quintero and the video of the arrest has quickly been making its way around YouTube.
Quintero later told reporters that the woman did not hear the officer’s request to stop because she had headphones on, but his response was to grab her by the arm. She jerked him away, not knowing it was an officer, and the cop immediately handcuffed her because he viewed it as resisting arrest. Two additional officers then arrived on the scene to help with the arrest. “She repeatedly pleaded with them, saying that she was just exercising and to let her go,” said Quintero. The woman can be heard screaming and crying as she is placed in the car.
Austin Police Department spokeswoman Veneza Bremner said that cops do not target jaywalking specifically, but make it a point to actively patrol the West Campus area. “I’m not sure how often they do it…but whenever the call load allows, they’re proactively out there,” she said. The woman has since been released from police custody, but it’s unclear whether she plans to file a lawsuit against the department.
“Maybe the plus size cops should follow her lead and go on a jog instead of wasting tax dollars on trivial matters,” wrote Quintero on his blog. “Just a thought.”
