In one of the more gruesome and traumatic crimes in recent memory, four teenagers from Oregon were arrested for beating a 16-year-old boy and carving a swastika into his forehead. Jesnna Montgomery, 15, Jess Taylor, 17, Blue Kalmbach, 15, and Shane Connell, 14, are all currently being held in juvenile hall. All of them except for Connell will be tried as adults for their charges that include first-degree kidnapping, second-degree assault and first-degree robbery.
Dustin Murrain, the victim in the crime, told police in Portland that she was lured into the shed by Mongomery and the other three boys were waiting. He was struck in the back of a head with a silver crowbar, shot in the chest and groin with a BB gun and then held down while a “swastika-shaped insignia” was carved into his forehead with a box cutter. Murrain said they also rummaged through his pockets and stole his iPod. He eventually escaped and made his way into a nearby shop to call for help.
Montgomery later told police that she and the boys had concocted the plan the night before and that Murrain would be “the bait.” She also didn’t indicate why he was being targeted specifically or that there was any motive for the attack. But despite the candid admission, all four teenagers surprisingly entered not guilty pleas on all the charges against them.
Murrain’s mother, Kelli, worried about the long-term effects of the attack. “He’s been severely traumatized not just physically, but emotionally. It’s something he’s gonna live with forever, especially if the scar of the swastika doesn’t go away,” she said. “I’m almost ready to lose faith in humanity at some point…it’s bad enough that we have the bad guys out there, you know, the adult bad guys, but these are young kids.”
