A Florida woman faces 120 years behind bars after locking her boyfriend’s son in a cupboard and starving the 12-year-old so severely that he weighed just 40 pounds. Sharon Glass was found guilty on eight counts of aggravated child abuse, while Michael Marshall is awaiting trial on similar charges. But Glass’ ex-husband and the boy’s teachers called child services to report the child’s disturbing appearances on several occasions, begging the question as to why they didn’t step in.
Glass and Marshall were arrested in 2012 when police found the emaciated boy lying on the bathroom floor. The boy testified in court and said he was “constantly locked up” by the pair. Marshall reportedly tied him to a bunk bed for three days; after the boy chewed through the ropes to escape, he was then locked in a bathroom. The boy also testified that he was locked in the bathroom on Christmas 2011 and only removed to watch other children open gifts before being locked up again with a stocking full of coal.
Several of his teachers at South Lake Elementary School said they “tried and begged” to have child services step in. One of them said she “honestly thought the next call that I got about him was that he would be dead.” Glass’ ex-husband also said he called child services about the boy on 12 different occasions.
“They told me stop calling,” he said. “If you’re told by DCF to stop calling, what else can you do? Who else can you call?”
Glass told the court that she wanted to leave the relationship with Marshall, but he threatened to kill her several times. She also claimed to be unaware of his dangerously thin frame because he always wore baggy clothes.
