A Utah woman has been arrested after police discovered seven dead children in her home in Pleasant Grove.
Megan Huntsman, 39, has been charged with six counts of murder. According to police, the woman gave birth to all of the babies they found and then killed them. Authorities say this has taken place over the last decade.
Police were alerted to the situation on Saturday when the woman’s ex-husband said he found a dead infant inside a home in which Huntsman lived until 2011. The body was that of a newborn. Police searched the premises and found six more dead infants stored in cardboard boxes in the garage.
Neighbors were shocked over the grisly discovery. Huntsman’s longtime neighbor Sharon Chipman says that she would let Huntsman watch her grandson often, saying “She took good care of him. She was good. This really shocks me.”
Another neighbor, Katie Hawker, says “She always looked kind of slim. I mean, to have this many babies full term, it’s like… where were they?”
Hawker added that Huntsman battled “a substance abuse problem,” noting that “she was not in good health. We were worried about the children who lived there with her.”
Huntsman has three older daughters who live at the house.
Another neighbor, Fred Newman, says “What’s shocking is the three older ones living there and not noticing that their mother was pregnant.” Vickie Nelson adds “It’s shocking and kind of morbid and strange.”
Her family has released a statement, saying “We are mourning this tragic loss of life and we are trying to stay strong and help each other through this awful event.”
