A Florida teen has been arrested after she choked her 7-month-old baby until he had seizures while he was in the hospital.
Police say the staff at the St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital in Tampa notified the authorities after they noticed bruising on the victim’s neck while he was being monitored in the hospital for seizures and sleep apnea.
When police looked at the security footage taken in the hospital, they noticed that the child’s 19-year-old mother Violet Hinrichs squeezed him so hard he lost consciousness several times and began to flail.
Hinrichs was arrested and has been charged with four counts of child abuse. She is in custody on $80,000 bond.
Hinrichs had brought the child into the hospital three weeks prior because he was having seizures. In a Facebook post, she wrote “wanted to update every one on Danny. He is being treated for seizures. In the past 24 hrs he had 6 with 2 lasting longer than 6 minutes… Please keep him in your prayers. If he does ok on these meds we will go home Sunday night.”
After being arrested, Hincrichs admitted to police that she was responsible for the bruising the baby had and the child has not had a single seizure since she was arrested.
Hinrichs’ sister Tiffany Coffey said “I don’t know why she would do this. I don’t understand how any human could do that to a child.”
Her sister believes Hinrichs, who has suffered from a learning disorder, could have Munchausen syndrome by proxy. Munchausen is a psychiatric disorder that causes people to make up ailments to get sympathy from others.
Danny has since been released from the hospital and has been placed in Foster care.
Coffey says that Hinrichs had another baby several years ago but gave him up for adoption because she was too young.
