An Alabama pastor has been arrested after reportedly raping a 13-year-old girl in his church.
Police say 58-year-old Tyrone Banks offered to watch his friend’s daughter, drove her to his church in Hueytown, and sexually assaulted her. He has been charged with rape by forcible compulsion and first degree sodomy.
Chief Deputy Randy Christian said: “He had a key to the church and took the victim inside to the kitchen where he sexually assaulted her.” After the incident, he drove the girl home. The girl told her mother who reported the assault to the police.
Lt. Don Edge says: “The sexual abuse of a child is not just bad because of the physical trauma, but there is a violation of trust. If someone you trust has violated you as a child, whether it’s a person of position, a family member or a trusted friend, that trust is lost and it has the potential to stay with the child for the rest of his or her life and it’s just a horrible crime on so many levels.”
Banks has been released after posting his $120,000 bond. He reportedly had a previous conviction for first degree robbery.
Just a few months ago a Georgia pastor was convicted of sexually assaulting a girl starting when she was 15 years old. He has been convicted of statutory rape, child molestation, and enticing a child and sentenced to 30 years in prison.
Houston County Assistant District Attorney Mark W. Anthony says: “What makes this case especially egregious is the fact that the defendant was the victim’s pastor, someone that she and her whole family looked up to, trusted and loved. He betrayed them and the entire church community.”
