The Octomom (a.k.a. Nadya Suleman) pleaded not guilty in court today to her welfare fraud charges today. Suleman, who made headlines in 2009 for having eight children via in-vitro fertilization as a single mother, despite already having six kids that she was using food stamps to support, allegedly failed to report $30,000 worth of her income so that she could receive $16,000 in food stamps. Authorities will try to resolve the case without a trial and help her avoid jail time if she pays back the money owed.
“She was running short on money. She went to the Los Angeles County Department of Social Services and asked for food stamps. And they gave them to her,” said Deputy District Attorney Bill Clark. “She’s got 14 children. We’ll try and work out a deal for her.”
The district attorney’s office said in a statement that Suleman did not disclose over $30,000 received from personal appearances and residuals from her “self-pleasure” sex tape when applying for public aid. Despite making well over $250,000 in 2012, she was still receiving government food stamps.
In a desperate last attempt to cash in on her notoriety, Suleman released a sex tape, danced at strip clubs, endorsed a form of high-interest loans called an “Octoloan” and gave fans the opportunity to speak with her on a 1-900 number. But the high cost of feeding 14 children meant that the income dried up fairly quickly and her family was reportedly facing eviction last month. She also defaulted on payments for a house she bought in 2010 and the lender foreclosed.
