It’s not too much to ask the President to do his job, is it? Barack Obama is scheduled to take his third lavish, taxpayer-paid vacation of 2014 by flying out with his family to Key Largo, FL. But with the current crisis involving Russian government making swift military and political moves in the Crimea region of Ukraine, a spokesman for Obama said he “might” shorten his third vacation in the last two months.
“It is possible the president may return to the White House on Friday as events unfold in Ukraine,” said White House spokesman Josh Earnest. The Obamas are scheduled to spend the weekend at the Ocean Reef Club, a five star resort on 2,500 tropical acres. Last month, the president flew to Southern California to meet with the King Abdullah II of Jordan and play a round of golf. Last January, American taxpayers were billed $4 million for a family retreat to Oahu, while First Lady Michelle Obama stayed for an extra week at Oprah Winfrey’s beach house in Maui to celebrate her 50th birthday.
Michelle is also scheduled to take another multi-million dollar trip to China later this month with her daughters. The eight-day vacation, disguised as business with a couple of “school visits,” will see them in Beijing, Chengdu and Xian. Last year, she spent $5 million on a two-day trip to Ireland that involved putting herself up in a $3,300 per night suite in Dublin. She and Barack spent a staggering $11 million last December to travel to South Africa for Nelson Mandela’s funeral, despite being in the country for a mere 13 hours.
The Obamas also spent around $100 million for a trip to Africa last year and another several million for a vacation to Martha’s Vineyard. In total, the Obamas have spent well over $125 million on their lavish vacations since coming into office.
