New York police are hunting for a man who randomly stabbed two young children, killing one, in an East New York elevator on Sunday.
According to reports, 6-year-old Prince Joshua Avitto and 7-year-old Mikayla Capers were on their way to get ice cream when they were stabbed by an unidentified man in the elevator of their housing project.
Avitto was killed. Capers is in critical condition at Brookdale Hospital.
The distraught mother was interviewed outside of the hospital, yelling “they done killed my baby. His birthday was in 16 days! Lord, they done killed my baby.”
Tenant Association President Inez Rodriguez said “they were just coming outside to get some ice cream and ices. This is the worst thing that I’ve ever seen in this neighborhood. It was just a normal day with kids running around. And then it becomes chaos. People running around and yelling. It’s hard for me to take. These are babies… why would anyone want to harm children?”
Neighbor Kevin Velez watched as EMTs carried Avitto’s body to the ambulance. “He was lifeless,” he said. “A very good boy, very respectful, running around full of life.”
Mikayla’s great-grandmother Regenia Trevathan said “what kind of animal would do a thing like this? I have faith in the NYPD to pound the streets until they catch this bastard.”
Police are searching for an African-American male suspect in his 20s. Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams said that he will personally give a $5,000 reward to anyone who has information leading to an arrest.
Just two days ago, an 18-year-old girl was killed near the building, stabbed 32 times.
Police are asking anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
