The mother of a 14-year-old girl who was “bombarded with hundreds of sexually explicit messages” by a teacher is furious after the offender was spared prison because of his “glowing character references’
According to reports, 23-year-old Tony Marsden sent thousands of messages to the girl. He “first used charm and flattery to groom but quickly grew explicit and sinister,” The Daily Mail reports.
When the mother discovered the messages, she says she needed 1,450 sheets of printer paper just to print them all out.
The early messages are fairly innocuous, saying things like “You are just amazing, you really are.”
Later, he tells her he “will make you toast in the morning, make you laugh and smile and never hurt you and always be there to catch you and everything.”
The very next day, he messaged her, saying, “Tell me what you are doing, will make me so horny.”
Other messages say things like, “Just try xxx I want to know what you’d do to me… Or you just want me to make you… and you can…”
When the mother handed the messages over to police, he was quickly fired and arrested.
Detective Inspector John Douglas said, “This man has abused his position of authority and trust by sending a youth explicit messages via social media.”
In court, however, a judge gave Marsden a suspended prison sentence, citing his “glowing character references.”
Marsden has been ordered to register as a sex offender and is banned from working with children for five years.
Judge Simon Hickey said during the sentencing, “You have the support of your family and good references, including one from a reverend. You have committed a serious offense, but I think it’s highly unlikely you will trouble the court again.”
“He should never have been freed,” the victim’s mother said. “I do not think they should be able to take into account character references from pedophiles. The messages were pornographic. My blood ran cold when I saw them – I was horrified at what I was reading.”
