A Washington woman has been arrested, again, for leaving her toddler children home alone while she served five days in jail for driving with a suspended license.
Police say 23-year-old Qiara Emerson left her 1-year-old and 3-year-old children alone for five days.
Neighbor Celina Dominguez told KIRO, “They’re babies. And she left them there to die.”
Dominguez was the one who discovered the children after she heard crying. Police were called and officers discovered the children inside, hungry and covered in their own feces.
“You could visibly see piles of poop, you could see pee, you could see vomit,” Dominguez said.
Police say, “Officers explained that it was difficult to walk through the apartment without stepping on rotten food, garbage, human feces or vomit.”
Police also say the children may have died not long after if help hadn’t arrived.
Neighbors reportedly pitched in to give the kids a bath before Child Protective Services took them into custody. They have since been placed in foster care.
Police say Emerson never mentioned that she had children in her house.
“I understand you were in jail and maybe you didn’t want your kids taken away but leaving them in there for almost a week without food or water… they’ll be dead; you don’t have kids either way.”
“It’s baffling to us; we can’t understand why a mother could not care for her children to the degree that she did,” Auburn Police Department commander Mike Hirman said.
Police are now looking for the children’s two fathers though have not had much luck in getting one to take his kid or finding the other.
Emerson has been charged with two counts of second-degree abandonment of a dependent person and is being held on $105,000 bond.
