American taxpayers are continuing to shell out millions of dollars for Michelle Obama’s lavish vacations. After spending a week in Hawaii last January, the First Lady will spend a week in China from March 19-26 with her mother and two daughters. Because she is also bringing dozens of Secret Service members and other White House officials for the trip to Beijing, Chengdu and Xian, the vacation is expected to easily reach the seven figure mark.
Last June, Michelle made Americans spend $5 million for a two-day trip to Ireland, which included staying at a $3,300 per night room in Dublin and booking equally lavish rooms for 30 of her staff members. For the vacations that the Obamas took last year to Hawaii and Martha’s Vineyard, public records show that taxpayers spent nearly $7.4 million for their flight expenses alone. Judicial Watch also reports that it cost $11 million for them to travel to South Africa last December for Nelson Mandela’s funeral, despite being in the country for less than 24 hours.
The most outrageous travel expense the Obamas have made so far was a separate trip to Africa last year that cost a staggering $100 million. Some of their expenses included fighter jets providing round-the-clock protection for them and stationing a Navy aircraft carrier off the coast of Africa that came fully equipped with a medical trauma center. A fleet of 56 support vehicles, including 14 limousines, also transported the Obamas throughout their stay.
Michelle and Barack’s travel expenses have become so extreme that Judicial Watch sued the Secret Service and Defense Department to turn over records on the amount of taxpayer money used for their flight expenses, almost all of which was for vacations and fundraisers. White House officials have not publicly commented on the cost of the trip.
