An Arizona man has been arrested after shooting his son-in-law with a flare gun and trying to stab him with a pocket knife.
According to authorities, 66-year-old George Brown told them he was “fixin’ to kill” Heston Carr, his daughter’s husband. Police say the two men have a “history of violence.”
Brown reportedly punched Carr in the face three times and then shot his son-in-law in the stomach with a flare gun, causing an open wound and burns. He then grabbed a folding pocket knife and attempted to stab the victim several times.
It’s unclear what caused the incident but the two men had a verbal confrontation prior to the violence. Sgt. Joe Favazzo says the confrontation was about Carr allegedly physically abusing Brown’s daughter. Witnesses say Brown stated that he didn’t just want to shoot Carr but watch him burn to death as well. Carr was treated by EMTs at the scene and did not require hospital treatment.
Brown has been charged with second-degree attempted murder, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, assault, and disorderly conduct.
The story has made national headlines and has elicited a wide range of responses, largely in support of Brown. Donna C. writes “With no doubt this all started with said son-in-law putting his hands on his daughter. Yes, I am the same kind of parent.”
Michael B. adds “The sad part is the daughter is going to go back to the son-in-law.”
Robert W. says “I’m not saying what he did was right, but I understand the feeling. I’ve wanted to nail my son-in-law a couple of times, but my daughter asked me not to. I’m not sure he understands how lucky he is. It doesn’t matter how old a daughter is, she is still daddy’s little girl, and not treating her right is a dangerous thing to do.”
