A Las Vegas man has pleaded guilty but mentally insane after he was accused of hacking a 4-month-old child and injuring the baby’s mother with a “medieval-style battle axe”. Now, he says he wants to apologize and explain his delusions when he is sentenced to life behind bars.
According to his attorney, Norm Reed, 38-year-old Harold Eugene Montague wants to apologize and explain his actions to “bring closure to the victims” of the brutal attack that happened over four years ago.
Reed said “it will be important for everyone involved to hear Harold’s account. The story he tells is a delusional story. It’s been gut-wrenching for everybody.”
Last Thursday, Montague pleaded guilty to first-degree murder with a deadly weapon, two counts of attempted murder, and battery on a police officer.
The plea deal states that Montague won’t have to face a jury and face the death penalty but will serve the rest of his life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Reed said “nobody would be comfortable with Harold getting out of prison, but I don’t think executing him is appropriate either. That’s why we came to this conclusion. Competency and mental illness are two different things. He understands the charges against him and is able to aid in his defense. With Harold, it’s mental illness.”
The deal also allows Sonia Lisset Castro to avoid testifying in court and reliving her horrible ordeal.
Four years ago, Montague stabbed his disabled sister-in-law 20 times inside his home before running outside and lunging at Castro and her son.
A neighbor who witnessed the attack called 911, telling the operator “Oh my God! Her face is split open where he hit her with the hatchet!”
Her son died but Castro survived, as did the man’s sister-in-law.
