A Washington man has been convicted of killing and dismembering his 3-year-old son after his wife threatened to divorce him and has been sentenced to life in prison.
Jeremy Brent Cramer, 38, was sentenced on Friday for the grizzly murder of his son just two days before the boy’s birthday. The murder occurred in a remote field in Montana following an argument Cramer had with his wife. Cramer reportedly told his wife that she could leave but she wouldn’t take their son.
The judge denied any possibility of parole, saying “We’re dealing with… the gruesome , horrible, dismembered butchery of a child. Your child. It’s almost impossible to fathom the gravity of that crime.”
Police say the boy was killed when Cramer hit him in the head with a rock. Cramer then cut the boy’s throat using a large knife, nearly removing the head from the body. Officials say they found the boy with his organs removed and his body cut in half.
In court, Cramer said “I love my son and wife with all my heart, and this is something I have to live with.”
Cramer’s wife submitted a written statement to the court, saying “Why did he do this? Why did he hurt a boy who loved him with all his heart? I know for sure this was planned ahead of time.”
After initially pleading not guilty, Cramer opted for a guilty plea, saying his prison sentence doesn’t matter with his son dead. Cramer told the court “I purposely killed my son. After a few months of thinking about it, I’m taking accountability for it. Whether it’s eight years or 80 years, my son’s not here. I just want to get this over.”
