A Washington man has been sentenced to 16 years in prison for putting his 6-week-old daughter in the freezer to make her stop crying.
Tyler Deutsch, 25, pleaded guilty to first-degree assault for first beating his newborn daughter and then putting her in the freezer. Luckily, the little girl has fully recovered even though her body temperature dropped to 85 degrees after the incident.
According to the National Institutes of Health, “a body temperature below 95 degrees is a medical emergency and can lead to death if not treated promptly.” The NIH website also notes that “Babies are especially at risk. Babies can get hypothermia from sleeping in a cold room.”
News reports say her arm and leg were broken she also suffered a head injury, “indicating more may have been done than just placing her in the freezer.”
Deutsch admitted to the crime, saying he put the girl in the freezer “because he was tired and she was crying.”
Prosecutor Mark Lindquist told reporters that “though the child has fully recovered, and we are grateful for that, this was a horrible and inexplicable crime.” The prosecution requested a 20-year sentence but, for whatever reason, the judge sentenced Deutsch to 192 months.
Sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer told a local Fox affiliate that “We don’t believe it was a case of punishment or discipline. It was only a six-week-old kid.”
Police were called when the mother returned home to discover what had happened. The mother told police that Deutsch tried to stop her, grabbing the phone away, but the terrified mom ran to the trailer park landlord’s office to contact authorities.
According to the mom, she never trusted Deutsch to be alone with her daughter and the incident occurred the very first time she left the two of them alone, for all of 90 minutes.
