Police are searching for a man caught on surveillance footage randomly attacking and viciously beating an elderly man to death in the East Village in New York City.
On Friday, 68-year-old Ruan Wen Hui was walking on East 6th at around 9 pm when a man approached him, began yelling, and pushed him against the wall. Hui, who lives a mere block away from where the attack took place, dropped to the ground where the assailant continued to kick and punch him.
After the suspect left, several people passed by Hui who was still on the ground. It took six minutes before someone stopped to help.
Hui was taken to Bellevue Hospital where he died from his injuries on Saturday.
Hui’s daughter said “I couldn’t believe that this happened to my father because my father is a very good man. He always helps people and he always smiles. Everybody thinks that he’s just the best person in the world.”
She then implored the suspect to come forward. “If you have a good heart, you should show up and you should pay for this,” she said.
His other daughter said “if anybody knows where is this man, please come forward and tell the police. We cannot wait to put him in jail. We are very sad to see him go.”
“Catch this guy and put him in jail so no one else get hurt like my dad,” she adds.
Neighbors were alarmed following the attack. One man said “the guy didn’t even take money or anything. It was just stupid violence.”
Alicia Marr added “it was senseless and it was stupid. It was just wrong.”
Crime Stoppers is offering a $2,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the case. Police are asking anyone who may have information to call 800-577-TIPS.
