A Chicago woman has been arrested after she stabbed her boyfriend to death for not buying her a gift.
Police have arrested 24-year-old Miata Phelan after she reportedly stabbed her 28-year-old boyfriend Larry Martin on April 30 during an argument. Phelan was reportedly upset after Martin had returned from the mall with gifts for his 8-year-old son and 25-year-old cousin but nothing for her. She says her birthday was the following day.
The argument reportedly began in car when the Phelan, who is seven months pregnant with Martin’s child, allegedly kicked and scratched Martin and called him selfish. When Martin pulled the car over to run an errand, Phelan actually stole the car and left him and his son and cousin to walk home.
When they came home, she reportedly locked them out. When Martin was able to get inside, Phelan reportedly stabbed him with a knife.
According to Assistant State’s Attorney Glen Rusk, Phelan yelled at a bleeding Martin “this is what you get for messing with me. I hope you die, motherf***er.”
Though Martin’s cousin attempted to keep him alive, Martin died shortly after in the hospital. His son Lavelle says “his last words to me, he said, ‘I’m gonna die, but I love you.’”
Phelan’s sister, Arnesia, claims that Martin had been abusive. She said that Miata “was excited about being pregnant” but called off her baby shower. “We knew something was wrong,” she added.
Phelan has been charged with first-degree murder and her bail has been set at $1 million.
