See, Alanis Morissette? Irony is everywhere.
A gun control activist in Buffalo, N.Y., was arrested last week for illegally carrying a gun into a public elementary school. Dwayne Ferguson caused quite the scene at Harvey Austin Elementary School after police responded to a pair of anonymous 911 tips. More than a dozen squad cars, a SWAT Team, K9 units, an armored vehicle and the Erie County Sheriff’s Air One helicopter descended on the area after initially fearing that another school shooting was about to take place.
Parts of two streets were closed and the school was placed on immediate lockdown as 60 students still on campus after school hours were ushered into the cafeteria. The school was searched room by room and Ferguson, who mentors an after-school program for disadvantaged students, was eventually arrested.
Ferguson explained that he has a license to carry a pistol, but ironically, he helped pass laws last year that forbid weapons at school regardless of this. Furthermore, he helped push that crime from misdemeanor status to felony status in response to the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. Ferguson also told police that he forgot the weapon was on his person, despite being in a gun-free zone.
However, others were less convinced. “I carried a pistol daily as a state trooper for 26 years, and have carried one daily since retirement (concealed carry permit) and I have never in over 30 years forgot I was carrying a pistol,” wrote one message board user. “If you are carrying and forget you are carrying a weapon, then you need to surrender your permit due to being incompetent.”
