An evil father finally came face to face with the daughter he raped for 15 years as he was finally sentenced for his six crimes. Frank Hertel, 51, raped his daughter, Heather Orr, beginning from the age of three until she was 18. He fled the U.S. in 2000 before he could be tried for his crimes and escaped to Germany, but Orr, now 31, tracked him down in 2009. He was finally arrested and extradited in 2012. A judge sentenced Hertel yesterday to between 19 and 95 years in prison for his crimes.
Orr told reporters afterwards that she chose to reveal her identity in order to help other women and children in similar situations. “I want to give a face and a name to women. I want them to stand up and say this is not right, what is happening to women and children who are abused,” she said. Orr is now married and has an 11-year-old daughter, which she told the court is the same age when the sexual abuse at the hands of Hertel was at its worst. “I wish more than anything that a stranger did this to me,” she said. “I love my dad because he’s my dad, but he hurt me more than anyone could imagine.”
Hertel reportedly confessed his crimes during a group therapy session with Orr in 2000, claiming it was “a sexual lesson for his daughter on how men behave.” The therapist reported him to police and he was eventually found guilty in 2001, but Hertel and his wife fled the country while on bond. They moved to Germany, where he used his brother’s identity to take loans from the German government and run a bar and grill.
The sick man repeatedly broke down in court and apologized to Orr, but she said he was only sorry that he had been caught. He will be 71 years old before he is eligible for parole in 20 years.
