A Cincinnati man described as an “enthusiastic participant” in child pornography showed no emotion as a judge sentenced him to 240 years in prison for the rape of two children.
On Tuesday, 40-year-old James Napier was sentenced for the rape of an 11-month-old baby and a 9-year-old girl, recording a video of him molesting the 11-month-old, recording a sexual encounter with the 9-year-old, possessing nearly 2,000 videos and images of child pornography, and distributing child pornography on the internet.
According to testimony, Napier molested the 11-month-old after getting involved in a relationship with her aunt in November 2009.
According to court documents, he abused the 9-year-old while her family was in the house.
U.S. District Judge Susan Dlott said that his lack of any remorse factored into her sentence.
Dlott said “he sat still, emotionless. He did not appear ashamed. He did not appear concerned. He appeared anything but remorseful.”
Dlott also said “the United States is unsure whether any sentence would be ‘just punishment’ under the circumstances.”
In the trial, Napier testified that he had been sexually abused as child. A court document states “if true, the events of Napier’s childhood are tragic. However, these events do not grant Napier the right to subject at least two small children to repeated sexual abuse at his hands.”
Assistant U.S. Attorney Christy Muncy told the court “the initial investigation of Napier identified him as an active and enthusiastic participant in the community of morally depraved individuals who trade child sex abuse images and videos to satisfy their sexual desires. One of his victims, due to her age, may never know the abuse she suffered. The other will never forget.”
