Florida police prevented numerous deaths from taking place earlier this week by shooting a naked man who was visibly under the influence of drugs. The still-unidentified man reportedly attacked a retired NYC police officer while walking Military Trail completely naked, then began chasing a man and a 10-year-old boy. Afterwards, he began to physically attack an 18-year-old man and bit him in the face.
Police arrived on the scene and attempted to subdue him with a Taser, but it had no effect on the 6’3”, 250 pound man. After he then tried to attack an officer, the cop fired three shots and brought him down; he was taken to Delray Medical Center and died shortly after. The injured police officer and teenager were also taken to the hospital, but expected to make full recoveries.
“[He] was obviously on some kind of narcotics to act like this. He’s obviously delirious on something,” said Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw. “The people that he assaulted … said this guy had super human strength. He looks like an NFL linebacker. And he basically started terrorizing people all up and down the street.” Police are now investigating who the man is and what drugs were in his system at the time.
The case had many similarities to the 2012 tragedy of Ronald Poppo, who was viciously attacked by Rudy Eugene under a Florida highway. Eugene was shot dead by police after he refused to stop chewing the homeless man’s face; Poppo miraculously survived the attack, but lost his left eye and nose and required a face transplant. Bath salts were rumored to be the cause of Eugene’s crazed behavior, but lab tests later only found marijuana in his system.
