A Chicago high school student has been arrested after she reportedly put her newborn outside in the cold in a plastic Walmart bag to kill him.
According to reports, she wanted to get rid of her son “because he looked like her ex-boyfriend and she was afraid her current boyfriend would leave her.”
Police say 18-year-old Ana Rosa Mora has been charged with first degree murder after confessing to school employees and police what she had done.
School officials became suspicious when Mora began asking questions about the dead baby that had been found near her home and whether police could use DNA to find the mother.
Mora denied being the child’s mother to the police but later admitted to putting her son in the bag because she worried her boyfriend might leave her.
A construction crew found the boy in the bag near her apartment several hours later. Andrea Vazque, the person who found the child, says “He was wrapped inside a plastic bag and he was around like nine months already so he was fully developed.”
The boy died from asphyxia inside the bag. He is believed to have been just one day old.
Mora is being held on $500,000 bail.
Dawn Geras, the president of the Save Abandoned Babies Foundation says that this shows that the state has failed to educate young girls about the Safe Haven law which allows anyone to leave an unharmed child under 30 days old at a hospital, fire station, or police precinct “and walk away with no questions asked.”
