A pitbull viciously mauled an attack a four-year-old boy in Arizona, but an online campaign to keep the dog from being put down has already collected nearly 45,000 signatures. Kevin Vicente was viciously attacked by the pitbull named Mickey while reaching for a nearby bone, resulting in several facial injuries that will likely require multiple surgeries, as well as result in permanent scarring. The attack took place at the home of the dog’s owner with his babysitter.
Hospital workers were reportedly traumatized after seeing the little boy, who now eats and breathes through tubes. A decision regarding the fate of Mickey was supposed to be made on March 4, but a restraining order against his euthanasia was extended until a decision can be made about his fate. A Facebook page dedicated to Mickey now has over 40,000 “likes” on Facebook.
Guadalupe Villa, who witnessed the attack and is the boyfriend of the dog owner, said Mickey bit Vicente in a manner that was designed to inflict damage and not intended as a warning. She also said Mickey killed a puppy that wandered into the backyard six months ago and believes he is a danger to the community. But supporters of the pitbull believe he was behaving instinctively and that Vicente shouldn’t have been in the yard unsupervised with him.
A fundraising website to help Kevin’s mother pay for his medical expenses has so far raised just over $6,000, but the bills are guaranteed to far exceed that.
