Nick Cannon, the host of “America’s Got Talent” and “musician”, is causing uproar over a publicity stunt for his new album “White People Party Music” in which Mr. Mariah Carey wears whiteface.
On Monday, Cannon sent out a photo of him wearing whiteface, captioned “It’s official…I’m White!!! #WHITEPEOPLEPARTYMUSIC #Wppm in stores April 1st!!!!!!Dude Go Get It!!!Join The Party!!!! #GoodCredit #DogKissing #BeerPong #FarmersMarkets #FistPumping #CreamCheeseEating #RacialDraft “Bro I got drafted!!””
Cannon didn’t stop there. After receiving some heat from commenters and news outlets, Cannon said “Damn I didn’t know it was going to be this hard being White! … I’m exhausted with all this “privilege” LOL #WhitePeopleProblems.”
One user commented “This is so f–king offensive. What if Britney spears made herself black and put a pic up that says ‘it’s official.. IM BLACK.”
Another uses added “Don’t get me wrong I think it’s hilarious but it’s just a double standard.”
In an interview with Us Magazine, Cannon explained his album title, saying “You go to a party and white people are having more fun than anybody. They know how to have a good time! I could have named the album ‘Purple People Party Music’ and you’d still get the same album, but it was just one of those things. You know, you deal with things like race, and people get uptight, so why not?”
The blog Jezebel summed things up fairly well, saying “It’s the most eye-brow furrowing, hypnotizing, and kind of terrifying thing I’ve gazed into lately. Clearly, Cannon isn’t trying to make a real big statement here, but considering making fun of white people is his go-to thing, the whole act is just odd and unsatisfying. It just reminds us that he’s much better at hosting than he is at performing.”
