A church that posted a “Support Our Troops” sign outside of their establishment has now been ordered to remove the sign under the threat of a fine. The Simple Truth Church, located in Nevada County outside of Sacramento, put up the sign to cover an old billboard. But Nevada County officials said the church needed a permit before making the change and needs to remove it immediately.
“If we don’t do anything, they may come out and cut the sign down. And, we would have to pay for them to cut the sign down, which seems to be pretty harsh,” said church member Bill Stokes. “Why would you knock something that has an America flag on it that says ‘Support Our Troops?’ I have no idea; I really don’t.”
Although most people in the community have no problem with the sign, someone apparently thought it was an eyesore and reported it to police. Bill’s wife, Julia, said she was simply trying to create a positive message with the sign and show solidarity families of military members in the community.
“It’s a little surprising. All we meant to do was beautify the area [and] the corner,” she said. “It’s a reminder for me — for everyone that drives by — to pray for the troops.”
