Texas is defying the federal government and taking border control into their own hands. Texas Lt. Gov David Dewhurst confirmed that state officials shut down the Rio Grande section of the U.S./Mexican border during a three-week effort, which was created over frustration at ongoing illegal immigration, human trafficking and drug smuggling in the area. The state has asked the federal government to increase their border security efforts in the area for years, but has grown frustrated at their lack of involvement.
“We had teams of Texas law enforcement in the brush, high-altitude aircraft, gun boats and more,” said Dewhurst to Breitbart News. This proves Texas can do the job the federal government has refused to do — to invest in the border and shut it down from illegal activities that are hurting Texans and other Americans. Texas will protect our own citizens and other Americans from the criminal gangs that are destabilizing our state and our nation.”
The Lt. Governor blamed the Obama administration for the increase in trafficking and drug smuggling along the border, stating that Border Patrol assistance needs to be at least doubled along the Rio Grande section. However, White House officials have reportedly refused to provide additional resources or manpower.
“Organized crime groups in Texas are contracting with Mexican cartels to be their enforcers. The cartels’ presence are in all of our major cities,” said Dewhurst. “This is just unacceptable. The federal government is not providing the resources. I’ve grown convinced over the last year that this administration has no intention of securing the border.”
Dewhurst confirmed that Texas officials conducted an initial three-week operation with the Texas Department of Public Safety, but maintaining this level of security will cost $5 million each month. The Lt. Governor said he is hoping to have $60 million approved by the State Legislative Budget Board, which would cover security efforts for the next year.
