Police were called to a Minneapolis high school after a food fight mushroomed into an all out race riot. Anywhere from 200-300 students took part in the fight, which resulted in at least one staff member being taken to the hospital after being hit in the head with a bottle.
What started as a food fight between a few students quickly escalated, resulting in the police responding with canisters of mace. Police said they had no choice but to use mace because students were hitting them with random objects.
Sgt. William Palmer, of the Minneapolis Police Department, said no weapons were involved in the fight.
The school was reportedly put on lockdown shortly after 1PM because of a fight between Muslim and black students. One student said that the initial fight began during the first lunch period, but by the third lunch period, tensions had boiled over.
“My lunch was third lunch,” Glasker said. “There was fight after fight after fight. People couldn’t breathe…It was very scary.”
She said the fights were over pride.
“I know it’s a pride thing between Muslims and black people,” she said. “They want their pride back for something. I don’t know.”
She also said “boys were hitting girls” and that some people were lying on the floor, with their hands over their heads, in surrender.
