widespread IRS fraud has been exposed. The scam involves using the social security numbers of Puerto Ricans and filing fake returns.
Puerto Ricans are US citizens but do not file taxes with the IRS unless they come to the Continental US.
The defrauders will typically use their SSNs in conjunction with fraudulent dependants to inflate tax returns.
So the IRS costs businesses billions of dollars in the hiring of accountants, tax attorneys, and time in preparing yearly taxes. The entire bureaucracy of the IRS costs the taxpayers billions just to operate. And now we see billions in fraud.
Couldn’t we all save a lot of money if the tax code was simpler?
