The Sgt. Gary Stein case will be expedited to next Friday despite the fact that Sgt. Stein had just got his defense attorney on Friday the 23rd. Jeff Schwilk, a veteran, asks if this is due process (March 24):
My fellow veterans, Is this fair? And they want to do an expedited hearing next Friday when he just got his defense lawyer yesterday. Is that due process, giving him just a few days to prepare a defense to save his 9 year career against what he calls blatantly false charges? If Sgt. Stein is accused of violating the UCMJ with “serious offenses”, is he not entitled to a trial (court martial) to try to prove his innocence? The charges listed on the attached letter are weak at best and bogus and politically motivated at worst.
Sgt. Stein’s armed forces facebook site was fully approved and sanctioned by his chain of command for the past 2 years. To charge him now for running a constitutional website is beyond lame.
Is this the future of our United States armed forces? The President doesn’t like a critical on-line post about following only lawful orders so they just remove Marines and soldiers from service? Think about the long term ramifications of this case. Is this still a Constitutional Republic or are we now a communist dictatorship? If it’s the latter, lets get rid of those silly, meaningless oaths and quit pretending that our military is supporting and defending our sacred Constitution. Someone in Congress needs to step in first thing Monday and ensure that the Sgt’s rights are not being trampled in the name of political correctness, and that he receives a fair hearing and due process. – Jeff Schwilk
Gary Stein posted this note on the Armed Forces Tea Party facebook page he created that is the cause of all this controversy:
The allegations drummed up against me are no more than an agenda by the Marine Corps to use me as an example. I have never spoken on behalf of the Marine Corps or in uniform. I have stayed within guidelines DOD Directive 1344.10 and made sure to. If I am guilty of anything it would be that I am American, a freedom loving Conservative, hell bent on defending the constitution and preserving Americas greatness. I am no more the Leader of the Armed Forces Tea Party than any other of 18,000 members are. I just happen to be normal guy who started a facebook page and who hold the Tea Party values close my heart and believes the Tea Party can enact real change in this county. We are all leaders in the Tea Party!
A DHS Report in 2009 stated that we needed to beware of Veterans that join right wing extremist groups and an example is being made of Sgt. Gary Stein.
