In a speech given at the Daimler truck factory in Mount Holly, NC, Obama said he is announcing a $1bn tax credit (and grants) to “alternative-energy cars and trucks”.
The tax credits would help 15 cities and towns “pay for charging stations for electric cars and biofuel pumps for alternative fuel vehicles to encourage people to switch to electric cars”.
Here are some quotes of Obama from that speech:
“We can’t just keep on relying on the old ways of doing business. We can’t just rely on fossil fuels from the last century. We’ve got to continually develop new sources of energy.”
“At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter how much natural gas, or flex-fuel or electric vehicles you have if there’s no place to charge them up or fill them up.”
This proposal would have to be passed by Congress. I doubt they will do it. I think this clearly demonstrates that Obama does not get it. Green energy may be the future but it is not the present. And presently, a lot of people are hurting by high gas prices. To focus his attention elsewhere is to ignore the vast majority of Americans.
To focus on electric vehicles is to look out for your buddies at the UAW and GM who have worked on a failed Chevy Volt. It is also only going to help the “limousine liberals” that both have the money to buy a new car and are environmentally conscience.
