According to a story in the Houston Chronicle, 70% of illegal immigrants in Texas receive some sort of welfare assistance. A smaller number yet still a large number of legal immigrants receive welfare: 54%.
“Illegal immigrants with children primarily use food assistance programs and Medicaid, with little or no cash or housing assistance” said the report.
Illegal immigrants should not receive any form of assistance from our government. No assistance. No employment. No driver’s licenses. No education. They will leave on their own. Or as Mitt Romney says “self deport”.
I believe strongly in legal immigration. But our legal immigration system is broken. On almost every foreign flight back to the United States that I’ve taken, I’d end up talking to someone on their first flight to America. Their citizenship was approved by way of sponsorship … meaning a legal citizen here in the US sponsors their brother or sister.
So we accept one immigrant into this country on the basis of their merits (ability to do a job) by issuing them a work visa. And now they are able to apply as a sponsor to as many of their family members as they want. The process takes a long time but it happens.
And when they come here, many of them do not even have jobs lined up. It is not like being sponsored for a work permit. They have no jobs. Legal immigration has its troubles too.
