This is a strange story but it looks like the Obama administration wants to release five Taliban terrorists as a good will move in the hopes that there will be peace talks between the US and Afghanistan.
In the Fox News article "Plans to turn over Taliban Gitmo detainees", they said :
The five detainees were said to be "hand-picked" by the Taliban preparing for the talks.
“Candidly, I don’t like the direction they are going in (with) reconciliation,” Rogers said.
As for the administration’s prisoner transfer plan, a senior congressional official who spoke to Fox News on the condition of anonymity confirmed money had been spent to send the men…. the administration tried to tamp down concern by saying they would not swap all five Taliban leaders at once; rather, three now and the others later.
So according to them it is less of a concern if all five are not sent at the same time? That by sending three now and two later is safer?
Prisoner swaps should be done at the end of a war not during. And the Taliban has no real reason to negotiate with us knowing that we already have intentions to leave in 2014. And if the claim is true that these prisoners will have been "hand picked" then it concerns me greater. Wouldn’t they select the most dangerous of all the men? In fact, one of the prisoners that they are requesting is Mullah Fazl Akhund, former leader of the army.
By way of Townhall.com‘s article called "Obama’s Fascination with Taliban Baffles Even Democrats"
According to the Israeli News Organization Arutz Sheva,Afghan Taliban Leader Mullah Omar confirmed “peace talks with the United States are on the horizon.” But, in exchange for an implied willingness to talk, “Omar has demanded the release of Afghan prisoners from the Guantanamo Bay detention facility and complete withdrawal of U.S. led forces from Afghanistan.” Included in Mullah Omar’s “demand” to Barack Obama is the release of Mullah Fazl Akhund, the former leader of the army in a war that has claimed the life of 1879 American troops and wounded 15,300 more.
Democrat and Republican Presidents have historically maintained a rigid policy of not negotiating with terrorists. Obama seems to have thrown that policy in the trash.
I just don’t understand some of the policies of this administration, do you?
