Iran is responsible for the deaths of 241 US Marines in 1983 after the headquarters of US troops in Beirut was attacked.
In an op-Ed to the Washington Times, Lynn Smith Derbyshire (who lost her brother) had this to say :
On Oct. 23, 1983, the government of Iran sent a truck bomb into the Marine Corps barracks in Beirut, Lebanon, destroying the building like a child smashing play-doh. Two hundred and forty-one men were killed, and countless others were wounded. It was mass murder.
This legislation will hold Iran accountable for the murder of the men who were killed and wounded on October 23, 1983. And if we can accomplish that, then we believe that we will truly have hope for the future.
Obama has pressed the "Democrats in Congress not to support a bill that would enforce massive judgements against Iran by the families of the Marines" that died in 1983.
Obama is getting a lot of criticism for this decision.
“This administration talks a lot about sanctions, but we know Iran is watching this case closely and, astonishingly, Obama’s people are taking Iran’s side,” Lynn Smith Derbyshire, a lobbyist for the legislation, said.
What Derbyshire says makes some sense. On one hand Obama talks about sanctioning Iran but on the other is unwilling to hold them accountable for what happened in 1983.
“We can show that international banks have moved billions of dollars of funds from Bank Markazi, Iran’s central bank, through banks in the U.S.,” Ms. Derbyshire said. “So far that money has been untouchable. We believe that is wrong. We are confident that most Americans would agree. Yet, the Obama administration is thwarting our efforts.”
