A coal mining company called Patriot Coal announced that they will be shutting down one of their mining complexes in southern West Virginia, as reported in WV Metro News.
Patriot Coal does not explicitly blame the EPA but the article does suggest that by regulating coal fired power plants, the need for it becomes suppressed in favor of natural gas. In the meantime, 250 great Americans working at the coal mines will be laid off.
The number of job losses may be greater. Companies like to downplay the number of job losses because of the negative PR it would create.
"We believe Patriot and our stockholders are best served by leaving our high-quality coals in the ground until demand for these products strengthens," said CEO Richard M. Whiting.
Company officials also blame the mild winter and weak U.S. and global economies as factors adding to the challenges ahead for the coal industry in 2012.
FirstEnergy, a coal fired power plant was forced to shut down six of their factories due to EPA regulations that elevated air toxicity standards. We reported that story yesterday.
Obama invests in failing clean energy companies and waste millions of taxpayer money on one hand and betrays proven industries and loses jobs on the other.
