Here is a clip of Steve Forbes on the Peter Schiff radio show.
Being a Conservative means taking positions that are sometimes unpopular. And I am offering up one such position.
Reagan once said that the "best social program is a job".
We should be thinking about bold ideas to get people into jobs.
A young woman came to my door the other day and asked if I could donate my cans to her. I did not understand what she was trying to say but her mother explained it to me. She wants to go on a church retreat and wants to raise some money by picking up the bottles and cans every Sunday.
I admired her mother for teaching her daughter the importance of working hard and earning your way in this world.
I am going to start leaving my recyclables on my front porch for her on Sunday.
But then I got to thinking about something. How much would she earn per hour. I only have a few bottles and cans myself… maybe 10 cents worth a week? Or 20 cents even. The average household has maybe $1 per week but not everybody is going to agree to participate. She’d at most get about $10 in recyclables from my entire community but she’d have to spend a lot of time to earn that money. Coming to my community. Picking up the bottles and cans from our front porches. Going to the recycling center. Say she has to spend two hours to do all this, then she’d be earning $5/hour.
It would be fantastic if a company would be allowed to hire her for $5 an hour.
- It would give her some stability.
- It would be safer than going door to door collecting cans.
- It would provide her with valuable experience in lieu of heavy tuition dues.
In order for people to prove their competency in any field they have to get a degree or go to college. And that adds debt. But what if companies could provide that competency to you and reward you a little bit for it too. Instead of being in debt, you’d be a little bit ahead with the same equivalent skills.
A high minimum wage discourages people at the lower levels from being employable. It also discourages companies from paying for training. It encourages workers to take on student loan debt everytime they want to retool their skills.
I understand the minimum wage is in place to keep companies from taking advantage from their employees but it has created many other problems in our society. And it would be great to see someone with bold ideas able to figure out how to get people into jobs paying them some amount of money instead of taking on student loans. Allow students to work.
